A runner’s paradise: One of the most breath-taking places on earth

The old stone villages of Zagoria are truly unique. They are found in the Pindus mountain range in Epirus in North-Eastern Greece. The name Zagoria means “the place behind the mountains” – a perfect name for these gems hidden in among towering peaks, deep, cool, green valleys, and linked by one of the coldest, cleanest, and bluest rivers of Europe. Cutting through all this is the Vikos gorge – the deepest gorge in the world, in relation to its width, according to The Guinness Book of Records of 1989. High mountain lakes, breath-taking views, natural rock swimming pools, and endless trails through this green and mountainous paradise, makes this the perfect place for running.

There, you can develop your physical and mental strengths at the same time, while experiencing nature in its purest form.

Alex’s Running Camp is based in Papigo, one of the Zagori villages famous for its wild mountain trails, untouched beauty, its warm hospitality and its delicious food. Runners will enjoy every aspect of their stay; they will experience memorable runs, and will leave with a totally new approach to successful and enjoyable running.

The program

A unique sports program developed to help each individual achieve their maximum performance both physically and mentally while avoiding the most common mistakes made by most athletes. Deals with psychological preparation, strategy, injury avoidance, nutrition, the importance of rest and recuperation, and teaches each person to begin learning how to listen to his/her body. Alex’s Running Camp focuses on the overlooked yet vital areas of sports, which make the difference between success and failure, health, or injury.

Aimed at runners of all level, from beginners to advanced, who want to develop, improve, and reach their goals without injuries and major disappointments.

7 days and 7 nights all-inclusive training camp (air fares not included), with daily theory sessions, guided training routes, special local meals, and local tourism.

*Perfect for family or others, who wish to accompany – discount for those not attending theory sessions or training runs. Activities available for people, who accompany runners – please request information.

Training Sessions:

The order and choice of the training sessions are subject to change depending on weather conditions, and runner’s levels. Most running routes have a shorter option. Altitude differences and distance are approximate and will be detailed closer to the trip on the website. Routes will be discussed and chosen according to the needs of the group.

  • Vikos Gorge from Monodendri – Papigo: 17.5 km, altitude: 500 m descent, 450 m ascent
  • Papigo to Drakolimni lakes mountain route: 16 km, altitude: 1450 m ascent, 1450 m descent
  • Konitsa – Moniou monastery forest route: 22 km, altitude: 1150 m ascent, 550 m descent
  • Voidomatis river route – Old Klidonia – Papigo: 16 km, altitude: 560 m positive, 300 m descent
  • Gorge reverse long route – Papigo – Vikos Gorge – Kapesovo
  • Papigo – Astraka peak – Papigo
  • Vikaki small gorge route: 8 km rest run

Theoretical sessions:

  1. Introduction – introduces the speaker and highlights her inspirational career as an athlete – from absolute beginner to professional.
  2. Personal Excellence – an in depth study to help each individual develop on a personal level.
  3. Base Training – development of a solid base for fine-tuning one’s training safely.
  4. Mental Preparation – mental tools for reaching one’s top performance in all levels of runners.
  5. Top Strategy – training & competition strategy for achieving goals & avoiding injury.
  6. Nutrition, Hydration, & Supplementation – for peak performance & top health for runners of any level. Debunks myths in these areas.
  7. Pitfalls in Sports – A unique session: tools for success while avoiding injury & disappointment. Also how to fit sports into you professional & personal life.


Flights, lodging, itinerary, equipment, & food

Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements to Greece. A mini bus will collect all participants, who arrive at Thessaloniki (Salónica) airport, and will return them to Thessaloniki airport.

There are many available flight options with various airlines including Ryanair (direct flights) and Austrian Air that fly into Thessaloniki (Salónica).

There will also be transport available for those who choose to fly in to Ioannina airport.

Full itinerary and a detailed list of necessary clothing and equipment will be sent to participants after registration, and will be posted on the website one month before the running camp. There may be slight changes in times or routes depending on weather conditions.

Rooms are double or triple and are elegantly decorated in the traditional mountain style, but with modern amenities: top quality sheets, pillows, all have en-suite bathrooms with hairdryer. If anyone requests single accommodation there will be an additional fee. Rooms can be requested for a group of 3 or 4 subject to availability.
